Now that you have identified your body type, it's important to know what type of clothing works best for your particular shape. If you remember nothing else when shopping for clothing for all of the four body types, keep this in mind: Balance is the key.
Round Body Types
Goal: To elongate the torso and to bring attention to your legs, breast and face.
Wear:
· V-neck and low or open neckline tops. These sort of tops add length and brings attention up towards your face, neck and chest.
· Wrap tops and dresses helps to give the illusion of a waistline.
· Pants should be wide legged, boot cut or flare leg.
· Wear A-line skirts, or straight skirts.
· Skirts should fall just at or above the knee.
· Empire waist dresses and A-line dresses suit this body type the best.
· Suits should be tailored.
· Wear light layering for example a Cami underneath a light jacket or blazer.
AVOID:
· Tapered leg pants or skinny pants. These will make your already slender lower half even more so and make your top appear heavier.
· Pants with pleating in front.
· Clothing that is too loose or too tight. Ill-fitting clothing looks sloppy and unflattering and can add the appearance of bulk where there is none.
· Avoid shoulder pads that broaden your shoulders.
· Avoid double breasted jackets.
· Avoid shirts with large ruffles or overly frilly detailing at the chest.
Triangle Body
Wear:
· Low, wide necklines
· Looser fitting tops
· Tops with texture, print and ruffles.
· Halter tops
· Skirts should be A-line or flared.
· Dresses should be Empire, Wrap or A-line dresses. Dresses should flow over and not place emphasis your hips.
· Pants and Jeans should be flare leg or wide leg pants.
AVOID:
· Skirts that are full as well as skirts that are body hugging.
· Pants that are high waisted.
· Pants that are tapered.
· Detailing on back pockets of pants or jeans such as flaps.
· Jackets and tops that land at the fullest part of the hips.
Goal: To create the illusion of curves.
WEAR:
· Belts to cinch the waist and create the illusion of a waistline.
· Wrap dresses and tops also give the illusion of a waistline.
· Jackets should land at the hip bone.
· Fitted jackets.
· Boot cut or slightly flared leg pants.
· Ruffled, feminine tops work well with rectangular body shapes by adding volume to your upper body and making your lower half appear smaller. Thus creating curves.
· Skirts with a tapered waist.
AVOID
· Clothing that is too loose or too tight. Remember you want to create the appearance of curves here.
· Long shapeless jackets or blazers.
· Pencil skirts.
· Straight leg pants.
